The Birth of Nepal Television Oct 13, 2026

Description

Before smartphones, the internet, and even Nepal’s own television network, many Nepalis gathered around a single TV set to watch programs broadcast from across the border. In 1984, as people in Kathmandu watched the funeral of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Doordarshan, Nepal still did not have its own television channel. So how did Nepal Television begin? Who first imagined bringing television to Nepal, and what challenges did the country face in turning that vision into reality? In this episode of In-Depth Story, we explore the fascinating history of television in Nepal—from the early arrival of television sets and foreign broadcasts to the launch of Nepal Television (NTV), the country's first national broadcaster. Discover how television transformed news, entertainment, culture, and everyday life in Nepal, and how generations of Nepalis experienced iconic programs that shaped the nation's media landscape.
