Description
Wicknell Chivayo, the Zimbabwean tycoon known across Africa as "Sir Wicknell," has died in a helicopter crash near Marondera, east of Harare. His wife Lucy Muteke, an aide and 2 pilots died with him. There were no survivors.
Presidents mourned him. William Ruto called him a dear friend. Samia Suluhu Hassan sent condolences. Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed his death. But across the continent, from Harare to Nairobi, from Dar es Salaam to Lagos and Johannesburg, a huge number of ordinary Africans did something our culture almost never allows. They refused to mourn. Some celebrated.
Why? In this episode of Frontline Africa, we investigate the man behind the reaction. Who was Wicknell Chivayo? How did a young man who once served time in a Zimbabwean prison become a friend of presidents in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and beyond? What happened to the 100-megawatt solar power plant Zimbabwe paid his company to build in 2015? What was his role in the business of election materials, and why do so many Africans call him an election rigger? Was he really a billionaire? And what about the old post that predicted his death in a crash more than a year ago?
We separate the record from the noise, and we ask the bigger question: what does this reaction tell us about how much ordinary Africans trust their leaders, their elections and their institutions?
Watch to the end and tell us what you think in the comments.
