Mike Alvarado Vs. Manuel Marquez | HIGHLIGHTS #boxing #sports #combat Oct 14, 2026

Description

🥊 FIGHT DESCRIPTION:

Despite surviving a dangerous ninth-round knockdown, Juan Manuel Marquez delivered a commanding performance to defeat Mike Alvarado and establish himself as the mandatory challenger to Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao had reclaimed his welterweight world championship just weeks earlier, outpointing Timothy Bradley Jr. in their April 12 rematch, setting the stage for the possibility of another explosive showdown between two longtime rivals.

The judges scored the fight overwhelmingly in Marquez’s favor, with cards of 119-109, 117-109, and 117-109. ESPN.com also scored it 117-109 for Marquez, who had already sent Alvarado crashing to the canvas in the eighth round. Even after being knocked down himself in the ninth, Marquez regained control and finished the job, showcasing the resilience and ring intelligence that defined his legendary career.

The victory carried even greater significance because it happened at the Forum, the very arena where Marquez had sharpened his skills as an unknown prospect. Between 1995 and 1999, he built his reputation there with a perfect 12-0 record, including nine knockouts, gradually transforming himself into a dangerous featherweight contender. Returning years later as an established star and conquering the same venue made the triumph a full-circle moment.

Marquez knew the challenge would be brutal and made no promises of an easy night.

“I said it was going to be a tough fight and I said it was going to be a difficult fight,” Marquez said. “I wanted to give the public here a gift. A gift that dignifies the history of this event and the history of the Forum.”

For Marquez, the performance was his way of honoring the fans and the arena that had helped shape his journey. But another potentially historic gift loomed on the horizon: a fifth showdown with Pacquiao.

The two legends had already fought four unforgettable battles, creating one of boxing’s greatest rivalries. Pacquiao held the series advantage at 2-1-1, but Marquez’s lone victory stood out as a definitive statement after years of fiercely contested encounters and controversial decisions. With Marquez now positioned as the mandatory challenger, the possibility of a fifth fight threatened to reignite one of the sport’s most explosive rivalries.
